I just got back from the hospital and am now at work again. I've just had my third appointment today at 2pm for laser treatment and steroid injection for the keloids on my right ear and left arm.
To those of you who don't know, I've had a huge keloid on my left arm since I was 9 years old as a result of the (MMR?) injection that I received while still in primary school. This is the reason why you'll hardly catch me wearing sleeveless tops. And in 2007, another keloid developed on the top part of my right ear, which grew from pimple-sized to about half the length and width of my pinkie.
When I first made and attended my appointment at RIPAS Hospital about two months ago, I was rather excited. I was excited because after years of having the ugly keloids on my arm and ear, I can finally have them reduced in size in hope that they'll soon disappear or at least fade to a lighter shade. However, I didn't know what I'd put myself into. I was shocked at the amount of pain that I was put into by the treatments I received.
Did you know that laser treatment can actually be very painful? Okay, maybe it was bearable. BUT I had to have MULTIPLE INJECTIONS on my ear after that which made the pain so much worse. And to think that I have a rather high threshold for pain. It's not like having multiple piercings, NO... Nothing close to it.
Initially, the first few "shots" of laser onto my right ear felt alright albeit a little cold. And I thought, "Okay, I don't mind doing this for however long it'll take to shrink my keloids." However, after a few more shots, I started to feel some pain. And when it went on, it became less bearable but still alright. THEN, the jabs came. That's when I felt like "Shyte, I don't think I can continue with this," but still allowed the jabs to keep going. Just so you know, the reason why the treatments hurt so badly is because the keloids (especially the one on my ear) is like really solid. And to quote what the doctor said to the nurse today, "It's like injecting into a solid robot!"
To be honest, I really didn't expect to go through this much pain. I've had steroid injections for my ear before, when I was still in the UK. Each time I went, I felt alright except for feeling a little flushed after but NEVER much pain. Seriously. Which is why I was quite surprised when the jabs hurt and bled so much when I got them here.
And I'm not exaggerating on the amount of pain I went through. The doctors told me that steroid injections ARE meant to be PAINFUL! My previous doctor even told me that some people actually cried from the jabs. I just thank God that the procedure lasts for only a short while while the pain would cease in a few hours or a day at most. At least in my case it does. I've got to say, a Brazilian wax didn't even hurt as much as the injections did!
In spite of my complaints, I'll still continue to visit the doctors to receive the treatments. What can I say except a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do to (try to) look good.
